Pre-Fabricated Solutions for Hospital Refurbishment

Prince Charles Hospital RefurbishmentOur customer was given a 4 year phased ward refurbishment task for this large South Wales Hospital. A substantial amount of work was involved including new plant rooms which had to be positioned across the roof of the hospital. All the existing mechanical & electrical services had to be removed from below the hospital and re-installed on the rooftop in order for the hospital to continue to operate smoothly. Further to this, all services then had to be adjusted to suit the refurbishment and subsequently re-installed back under the hospital.

Background

Built in 1978, the Prince Charles Hospital is a district hospital located in Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales. As part of a continuing refurbishment scheme, the health secretary announced in 2018 that the hospital would receive £36 million in order for the planned works to carry on, modernising the hospital and increasing it’s efficiency.

Kernow Fixings’ Involvement & Support

Prince Charles H FramesKernow worked closely with the contractor to provide a number of pre-fabricated off-site solutions. From supplying consumables for the fit out of the energy centre, to supplying a large number of bespoke modular supports and H frames which were cut, fully assembled and delivered to site, ready to be quickly and easily installed.

Providing on-site technical site visits and collaborating with suppliers, Kernow were able to provide designs with accompanying load calculations for some of the key service routes supports before subsequently fabricating and supplying these to site.

This not only reduces the onsite labour needed, but also prevents any hot works from being carried out on site promoting a safer workplace. Kernow are no strangers to bespoke items such as this, meaning we can draw on our knowledge to provide the best solution to our customer.

As with many projects, this one had a very tight time scale and speed was of the essence. To assist with this, we used our own vehicles to provide a direct delivery service to site to be sure items were delivered on time to suit the customers' requirements. Design and pre-fabrication services also had to be carried out to a fast time scale, which required close collaboration with suppliers and design team.

Outcome

Things progressed well during the first phase of this project and the customer was extremely happy with the way Kernow performed. A combination of our pre-fabrication services, quick turnaround times and direct to site deliveries all sped up the project and contributed to the customer achieving their deadline. We look forward to supporting with further phases of this large project in the coming years.
